The Blog Begins…
I have, for years, written things down for others to read. Most of the time I end up being the only one who reads it and that is precisely what will most likely happen with the thoughts I write on this site. I don’t really care about that. Writing things down is a release for me. It helps me clear my head and move on to other things.
Many of the things I write here will most likely be God-oriented material. I am a Christian. But, I am also a husband, a father, a pet owner, an American citizen, and, some would say, a fairly entertaining writer. I have thoughts on things that aren’t always mainstream. Some would say they are odd, and some can’t even find a word or comment to describe what I have just written.
I am thinking today of what it means for me to be a Christian. Why am I a Christian? What has God done for me and, more importantly, what am I doing for others because of God?
My family and I used to worship with congregations who literally believe that they, along with about 35 other congregations in the world (ok…that’s a slight exaggeration), are the only ones going to heaven. It’s like being in a little secret club. They preach to themselves. They love lectureships because they can all preach to each other without fear of rejection by any of those in attendance. They can all agree on every single point they make. Sounds great right? Sadly, this is not the kind of religion Jesus wanted us to practice. He wants us to “touch” the lives of others. He does not want us to “judge” others…He wants us to love others. He wants us to show the Grace of God in our lives to others. That is what He meant when He said “let your light so shine”.
Do I believe that there are only a few who will travel that path with Christ back to heaven to live with the Father? I do. Can I tell you who that will be? I cannot. Nor should I try. God is our judge…I am not!
So, why am I Christian? I am a Christian because of the first part of that word…”Christ”! I am a Christian because God loved me while I was yet a sinner. He sent his Son to this evil world to bring His Light into it in order that my life may be illuminated with the grace and the love that God showed me before the foundations of the world were laid. I am a Christian because it is the only way I can make it through each day. It is the only way I know how to live through life and its inevitable struggles and suffering it will send my way. In short, I am a Christian because God so loved…me!
